How to change the Account Settings of my email tools to send message from smtp.ust.hk?

To protect our users for better security, authentication is required when sending message through the Outgoing Email Server smtp.ust.hk server. Change the Account Settings of your email tools for the authentication requirement:

Thunderbird

  1. Start Thunderbird
  2. Select the Tools menu
  3. Select Account Settings
  4. Select Outgoing Server (SMTP)
  5. Highlight required smtp.ust.hk and click Edit


  6. Change the port to 587 and use STARTLS as the Connection security


  7. Click OK
  8. Restart Thunderbird

Outlook

Exchange users are advised  to Set up an Exchange Account in Microsoft Outlook instead of changing the email server settings. Please follow the steps below if you need to use the traditional IMAP/SMTP server:

  1. Start Outlook
  2. From the FILE menu
  3. Select Account Settings
  4. Highlight the IMAP/SMTP type and click Change or simply double click the required IMAP/SMTP type (no need to change for the Microsoft Exchange type)

  5. Select More Settings...


  6. Select Outgoing Server and checked My outgoing server (smtp) required authentication


  7. Select Advanced and change the port 587 with TLS connection


  8. Click OK
  9. Click Next
  10. Click Close after tested OK
  11. Click Finished
  12. Click Close to close the Account Settings

Mail (Mac users)

  1. Start Mail
  2. Select Preferences... under Mail
  3. Select your IMAP account
  4. Select the Outgoing Mail Server smtp.ust.hk

  5. Select Edit SMTP server List...

  6. Use port 587 and SSL together with your user name / password under the Advanced tab
  7. Click OK
  8. Close the Accounts settings
  9. Restart Mail

Email App

  1. Start the Email App
  2. Select Settings
  3. Select your HKUST account
  4. Select Outgoing Settings if there is one (there is no Outgoing settings for Exchange connection)


  5. Change the Security type to STARTTLS and checked Require sig-in if it is not


  6. Select Done
  7. Exit your account settings

Windows Live Mail

For Windows Live Mail, please use port 465 or port 25:

  1. Click Accounts
  2. Click Properties
  3. Click Servers and checked My sever required authentication

  4. Click Advanced and change the port to 465


  5. Click OK to save the settings and restart your Windows Live Email

Eudora

  1. Click on the "Tools Menu" and select "Options"
  2. Select the "Sending Mail" category
  3. Use the following settings:
    • SMTP Server: smtp.ust.hk
    • Allow Authentication
    • Secure Socket when sending: If Available, STARTTLS
  4. Click "OK"

PC-Pine

Configure Outgoing Mail Server (with secure connection) with PC-Pine version 4.64:

  1. Select "Setup" (S) from the Main menu
  2. Select "Config" (C)
  3. Enter smtp-server in the format of: smtp.ust.hk:587/tls/user=<your account>

  4. Select "Exit Setup" (E) and press "Y" to commit the changes
