Cannot open attachment with Thunderbird

In some cases, the file size of an attachment reported in Thunderbird is smaller that the actual size and user cannot open the attachment. User may consider to try the following in order to fix the problem:

Reload the affected folder (e.g. Inbox) again:

  1. Right click the containing folder and select "Properties..."
  2. On the "General Information" Tab click on "Repair Folder"
  3. Switch to "Synchronization" Tab and click on "Download now"

In additional to the above steps, advanced users may also consider the following workaround:

  1. Click Tools --> Options --> Advanced --> Config Editor
  2. Enter 'fetch' in the filter box, then double click on 'mail.server.default.fetch_by_chunks' to toggle it to false. 
  3. Restart Thunderbird
