Setting up Windows 7 Device to Access eduroam

This page provides sample instructions for HKUST Staff & Students to set up Windows 7 devices to connect to eduroam.

Users are recommended to use the Wi-Fi Services Advisor if they are not sure which Wi-Fi service should be used.

The setup guide consists of 2 parts:


Automatic Setup

Step 1: Bring Up Wireless Network Connection Menu

  1. Click Network icon in the system tray ( located at bottom right corner normally )

  2. Select eduroam

  3. Tick Connect automatically ( Note: If you don’t want to store the password, please untick it )

  4. Click Connect

 

Step 2: Enter User Name and Password

  1. Enter your ITSC Network Account with " @ust.hk " in User name field

  2. Enter your ITSC Network Account Password in Password field

 

Step 3: Acknowledge Windows Security Alert

  1. Click Details

  2. Make sure

    • Radius Server is wireless.ust.hk

      • And

    • Root CA is Thawte Primary Root CA - G3

  3. Click Connect


Congratulations! You have connected to eduroam!


Manual Setup

Step 1: Bring up the Control Panel to Add Wireless network Profile

  1. Click Start at the bottom left corner Control Panel

  2. Click View network status and tasks, under Network and Internet

  3. Click Set up a new connection or network

  4. Select Manually connect to a wireless network

  5. Click Next

 

Step 2: Configure the Wireless Network Profile

  1. Enter wireless network information

    • Network name: eduroam

    • Security type: WPA2-Enterprise

    • Encryption type: AES

    • Click Next

  2. Click Change connection settings

  3. Click Security tab and configure Wireless Network Properties

    • Security type: WPA2-Enterprise

    • Encryption type: AES

    • network authentication method: Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP)

    • Tick Remember my credentials for this connection each time I’m logged in

    • Click Settings

  4. Configure Protected PEAP Properties

    • Tick Validate the server’s identity by validating certificate

    • Tick Connect to these servers

    • Enter wireless.ust.hk

    • Trusted Root Certification Authorities: Thawte Primary Root CA - G3

    • Notifications before connecting: Tell user if the server’s identity can’t be verified

    • Authentication Method: Secure password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)

    • Tick Enable Fast Reconnect

    • Click Configure

  5. Untick Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)

  6. Click OK

  7. Click Advanced settings

  8. Configure 802.1x settings

    • Tick Specify authentication mode

    • Select User authentication

    • Click Save credentials

  9. Enter your ITSC Network Account " @ust.hk " in User name field

  10. Enter your ITSC Network Account Password in Password field

  11. Click OK

  12. Click OK

  13. Click OK

 

Step 3: Bring Up Wireless Network Connection Menu

  1. Click Network icon in the system tray ( located at bottom right corner normally )

  2. Select eduroam

  3. Tick Connect automatically

  4. Click Connect

 

Congratulations! You have connected to eduroam!
