Starting from Windows Vista, all desktop Windows operating systems require activation after installation. There is a 30 days grace period. Reminders in various forms, from pop up dialog to enforced background with a "non-genuine Windows" message, will be presented to user if the system is not activated after the grace period. The system may not be fully functional until reactivated.
